Klaus and Rosa built their 2 bedroom Granny Flat to bring their daughter home and help her save money

Klaus and Rosa’s grown-up daughter had been living in the United States for some time. When she returned to Australia, she was looking at living in the city – paying upwards of $1000 a week rent. Setting up life again in a new country – even if it has been home before – is no easy task, even before you look at the costs involved.

With some money behind them in retirement, and some equity in their property, Klaus and Rosa had seen Cubitt’s beautiful Granny Flats advertised online. They visited the displays in our Canberra showroom and really liked the look of the layouts.

When they spoke to Cubitt’s team members they learned they could build another 60m2 secondary dwelling (or Granny Flat) on their existing property.

“Our daughter talked to us and said she would like to do something similar on our property, so we decided the price was right and that we were going to build it”.


Klaus and Rosa were delighted with the finished product: “It turned out to be very lovely from the outside and inside. Two nice bedrooms, plenty of space in the unit, and space to put things away, for two people to live there it is comfortable

Asked if there was any reason they hesitated on the build, Klaus told us candidly “Our only concern was about where we were going to build on the property. We built where our garden was that we grew our vegetables. Unfortunately, it had to go. We tried to work around it with the Cubitt’s team, but we ended up having to build over it.”

The new granny flat residence on her parents Crestwood property now enjoys the beautiful aspect that the vegetable garden did previously, with a new garden being planned for this spring.

“Our daughter is going overseas again soon and when she comes back, she is going to move in”
