Klaus and Rosa built their 2 bedroom Granny Flat to bring their daughter home and help her save money

Klaus and Rosa’s grown-up daughter had been living in the United States for some time. When she returned to Australia, she was looking at living in the city – paying upwards of $1000 a week rent. Setting up life again in a new country – even if it has been home before – is no easy task, even before you look at the costs involved.

With some money behind them in retirement, and some equity in their property, Klaus and Rosa had seen Cubitt’s beautiful Granny Flats advertised online. They visited the displays in our Canberra showroom and really liked the look of the layouts.

When they spoke to Cubitt’s team members they learned they could build another 60m2 secondary dwelling (or Granny Flat) on their existing property.

“Our daughter talked to us and said she would like to do something similar on our property, so we decided the price was right and that we were going to build it”.

Klaus and Rosa were delighted with the finished product: “It turned out to be very lovely from the outside and inside. Two nice bedrooms, plenty of space in the unit, and space to put things away, for two people to live there it is comfortable”

Asked if there was any reason they hesitated on the build, Klaus told us candidly “Our only concern was about where we were going to build on the property. We built where our garden was that we grew our vegetables. Unfortunately, it had to go. We tried to work around it with the Cubitt’s team, but we ended up having to build over it.”

The new granny flat residence on her parents Crestwood property now enjoys the beautiful aspect that the vegetable garden did previously, with a new garden being planned for this spring.

“Our daughter is going overseas again soon and when she comes back, she is going to move in”

How long does it take to build a Granny Flat?

Building a Granny Flat with Cubitt’s usually takes around 12 weeks, however, you will also need to allow time for council approval, site visits and feasibility studies too. If possible, our council and drafting team will obtain a Complying Development Certificate (CDC), for your Granny Flat to help your project get started as quickly as possible. Your consultant will provide you with an accurate timeframe for completion of your Granny Flat and keep you updated on any changes with regular progress reports.

Do I need council permission to build a Granny Flat in NSW?

Yes, you’ll either need to gain Council approval or obtain a CDC (Complying Development Certificate) before you can build your Granny Flat. I thought Granny Flats had to be 60m², how is it that Cubitt’s designs are bigger?

The space limit of 60m² (or 90m² in the ACT) for Granny Flats only applies to the interior space. This means that any external areas like decks, garages, alfresco dining spaces and verandahs can be included in your Granny Flat design without encroaching on that 60m² limit. Our modern Granny Flat designs are spacious, comfortable and airy and will make you feel right at home. We’re also pleased to offer custom Granny Flat designs at no extra cost, so if you’ve got something particular in mind, we can make it happen.

What is a turnkey Granny Flat?

“Turnkey” is a term that means a property is ready to move into.
